Chimney Tops is a distinctive 4,724-foot mountain in Tennessee’s central Great Smoky Mountains, known for its double-capped rocky summit, rare bare high point, and striking silhouette. Formed from Anakeesta metamorphic rock about 200 million years ago during the Appalachian orogeny, it also holds deep meaning in Cherokee tradition, where it was called Duniskwalgunyi, or “forked antler,” and figured in the legend of Aganunitsi and the Uktena. Trails at its base follow long-used mountain routes later developed into roads in the 19th century. Now one of Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s best-known landmarks, its summit remains closed after the 2016 fires increased rockfall danger.
