Outer Island Light stands at the northern tip of Outer Island in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands, in a notably remote Lake Superior setting. Designed by Orlando Poe and built under the supervision of Godfrey Weitzel, the station includes a lighthouse attached to a two-story red brick keeper’s quarters. Its history has long been shaped by erosion on the high bluff beneath it. During a fierce storm on September 2, 1905, keeper John Irvine, alone on the island, went into the surf and rescued five of ten men from the wreck of the schooner-barge Pretoria. In 2004 and 2005, major erosion-control work helped protect the site, now part of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
