Nature
Humpback Rock, or Humpback Rocks, is a prominent greenstone outcrop near the peak of Humpback Mountain in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, known for its rounded shape and unusually open rocky summit. Rising to 3,080 feet, it offers wide views of surrounding valleys, farmland, and forested ridges, and a short steep trail has made it one of the more accessible viewpoints along this part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its geology spans immense time, from ancient granite and greenstone to later uplift during mountain building. Humpback Gap below also served wagoners on the Howardsville Turnpike and preserves traces of mountain life, including farm buildings and a stone fence associated with enslaved labor.
