Second Garrote was a sizable settlement established at this rich placer location in 1849 by miners spreading east from Big Oak Flat and Groveland. Its famous Hangman's Tree, part of which still stood in 1950, was reported to have been instrumental in the deaths of a number of lawbreakers during the locality's heyday, giving the place its name.
