The Red Bird River Petroglyphs are an archaeological site in Clay County, Kentucky, made up of unusual linear carvings cut into a large stone that originally formed part of a sandstone cliff at Lower Red Bird along the Red Bird River. Road construction and widening along Kentucky Route 66 undermined the cliff, and in 1994 the roughly 50-ton carved rock fell onto the roadway and was moved to Manchester for protection, where it is now kept in Rawlings/Stinson Park. Long disputed and sometimes linked by tradition to the Cherokee chief Red Bird, the inscriptions remain of uncertain origin and are significant for both their distinctive form and the debate over their meaning.
