Earlier known as Yellow Springs, Chester Springs had been a resort since 1750. After the Battle of Brandywine, Washington established his headquarters here on Sept. 17, 1777. During the winter encampment at Valley Forge in 1777-1778, it served as a hospital for his soldiers.
