In Dresden, North Dakota, this open-air museum preserves the remains of a prairie village and uses original and relocated buildings to tell the story of Cavalier County and the decline of many small Great Plains communities. Dresden, founded in 1897, grew to about 250 residents by 1920 before shrinking to around 20 by 1970. Opened in the late 1960s, the site had expanded to seven buildings by 1989, including Holy Trinity Catholic Church, built in 1937, the Dyer School, another one-room school used as a library and polling place, a Burlington Northern Railroad caboose, a display building, and an early-20th-century cook car.
