From circa 1915 through 1923, the Richards Hill Ski Slide stood near this site as a popular winter gathering place for people from miles around. Its placement allowed a skier who climbed to the top and began the descent to gain enough momentum to travel down the hill, across Concord Avenue, and over the frozen Rock River to its easternmost bank. In 1923, after two boys, Herbert and Leonard Born, were struck and killed by a passing motorist while tobogganing down the hill, the slide was closed, and the city made sledding on Richards Hill illegal, a law that remains in effect today.
