Contoocook Railroad Bridge in Contoocook, New Hampshire, is the oldest surviving covered railroad bridge in the United States and one of the clearest surviving examples of a double-web Town lattice railroad bridge. The crossing was first built in 1849–1850 and substantially rebuilt in 1889, probably by engineer Jonathan Parker Snow and carpenter David Hazelton. It stayed in railroad use until 1960 or 1962, then served as a warehouse before entering public ownership. The bridge survived major storm damage in 1936 and 1938, and later preservation work stabilized its structure, helping secure its place with the nearby depot as one of New Hampshire’s most distinctive historic railroad landmarks.
