During the Battle of White Oak Creek, two troops of Union cavalry led by Colonels Jennison and Pennock approached across the level fields of the valley to engage one hundred sixty Confederate troops under Colonel Upton Hays, who were encamped along both sides of the creek and among the timber and rocky bluffs. Eight Federals and one Confederate soldier were killed in the Civil War battle.
