On December 29, 1954, an Air Force C-119 "Flying Boxcar" crashed near here, killing nine military personnel. The plane was en route from Stewart AFB in Smyrna, Tennessee, to Brookley-Donaldson AFB in Mobile when severe weather, probably a tornado, struck it and tore off the left wing, which then hit the cargo area. Badly damaged, the plane caught fire and went into a nosedive. Two men parachuted out and survived. Wreckage was scattered over a large area of Grassy Mountain, the Shin Point community, and the Paint Rock River.
