Established in the 1830s as the community developed, the cemetery began with a first plot donated by J.R. Dearman, and four generations of the William Thomas Hill family made later grants. The first person buried there was a child fatally bitten by a rattlesnake. Many rural residents and transients lie in unmarked graves.
