Three mothers and their five children were buried in the Hathaway Cemetery in Section 34 of Jersey Township North: Lydia and John McCluer; Katherine, Elizabeth, and John Arnspiger; and Margaret, Elizabeth, and George Davis. In 2010, the stones were found stacked beneath a tree by a man who had recently purchased the land, and after he asked the Jersey County Historical Society to take possession of them, the state granted permission to create a memorial by repairing and resetting the stones because the original cemetery could not be located. Three other stones in the memorial, for Laura Biggs, J.G. Hutchinson, and Mary Kurby, came from Jerseyville's oldest cemetery, once located across the street in what is now a park. State laws enacted in 1989 protect graves, grave markers, and grave artifacts more than 100 years old from vandalism, excavation, cultivation, removal and exposure, defacement, and destruction, including by landowners, with offenders subject to misdemeanor or felony charges and fines up to $10,000 for each occurrence.
