New Indian Ridge Museum in Amherst, Ohio, unites local history, archaeology, and conservation on Beaver Creek around the historic Shupe Homestead. Founded in 2000 by Matt Nahorn, it revived part of the dispersed collection once associated with Raymond C. Vietzen’s earlier museum near Elyria and honored Vietzen’s long work studying the region’s past. The site also includes the Shupe house, likely built about 1812 on Jacob Shupe’s 1811 settlement and regarded as Amherst’s oldest house and probably Lorain County’s first frame house. Woodlands, wetlands, floodplains, and native species make the property significant for ecology as well as history.
