Two thousand years ago, nearby volcanoes erupted so violently that they tore themselves apart, and rivers of lava floated huge chunks of crater wall down to this spot. Over time, rocks crumbled and the seeds of rabbitbrush and limber pine rooted in the sparse soil. A hundred years ago, a visiting minister called this jumble of rocks, shrubs, and trees a garden fit for the devil himself, giving rise to Devil’s Orchard. The trail through this place is as unusual as its name, inviting people to think about ideas, concerns, and possible solutions rather than simply identifying objects.
