Teamster wagon drivers fiercely resisted the Portage Railroad as its right-of-way was cleared, using the newly cleared and graded surface as their thoroughfare and ignoring interruptions caused by foundations for future engine houses in favor of treating it as a new wagon road. Only after track was laid and the engine houses were built was the route reserved for portage traffic alone. A New Portage Railroad later replaced the old Portage, hauling canal boats over a slightly different route through and over the mountains. Just as the Portage Railroad had helped put teamsters out of business, the New Portage and finally the Pennsylvania Railroad made the old Portage obsolete. Remains of the New Portage include the Muleshoe Bridge, which crosses Old US Route 22 near the base of Incline 8. This area was also a gateway for migrations west, and the foundations of Engine House 8 are buried nearby for protection.
