Springwood at Hyde Park was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birthplace, lifelong home, and burial place, and later became a National Historic Site. Rooted in colonial land grants and shaped from an early nineteenth-century farmhouse into a large estate by successive owners, it was transformed by the Roosevelt family into both a residence and a center of public life. Franklin and Sara Roosevelt greatly enlarged the house, redesigned its grounds, and developed forestry plantings across the property. During Roosevelt’s presidency, he returned there often for rest, planning, and diplomacy, hosting major international guests. He gave the estate to the American people, and he and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried there.
