Franklin Delano Roosevelt centered his life on Springwood, the family estate, returning there as he began married life with Eleanor, launched his political career, and recovered from the effects of polio. Born in the estate’s main house in 1882, Roosevelt later moved into Springwood with Eleanor after their 1906 marriage and lived there with his mother Sara; when he died in 1945, Springwood became his final resting place.
