On the Gamble plantation, the first type of cabin erected to house enslaved people in the late 1840's was constructed of Sabal Palm logs that grew in abundance along the Manatee River on Florida's frontier. Limited records also indicate that sometime in the 1850s, a second style of cabin was built of tabby, a primitive form of concrete, creating a more permanent structure.
