Gilliam’s first worship services were held in a railroad box car. In 1902, Gilliam Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was built across Red Bayou north of the present church. That building was destroyed in the storm of 1908, along with all but one of the structures in Gilliam. Later that same year, a new church was built on this site. In 1955, Gilliam Methodist Church was rebuilt and enlarged. Its purpose was expressed as service to the community and reflection of the Holy Spirit rather than the measure of its building.
