C-40 is a piece of steel from World Trade Tower 1 that spanned floors 98 through 101 on the north face, just above the impact site of American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 and the first hijacked terrorist plane to crash into the tower on September 11, 2001, carrying 76 passengers, 11 crew members, and 5 terrorists. It weighs approximately 2.3 tons and is 18 feet long. Obtained from the New York/New Jersey Port Authority and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where it was studied and stored as part of the federal investigation into the collapse of the towers, it was later selected in New Jersey by Patrick Tiberi, Kathy Cocuzzi, Thomas C. Ullom, and Michael Hooper. Its name came from the cleanup effort, in which the C stood for Cleremont Terminal in Jersey City, New Jersey, and 40 identified it as the fortieth piece saved from that site.
