Jake the Goose was the most famous of Camp Miakonda’s many mascots, a goose that arrived from unknown parts in the early 1950s and lived there year round for the rest of his life. He followed Camp Ranger Don Fanning as he worked around the property, often attended chapel services during the summer camp season, and joined in by honking during hymns. When Scouts lined up for hikes around camp, Jake and a neighboring beagle would line up as well and walk with the boys. When the first Order of the Arrow Lodge was organized there in 1957, it was named Wa-Be-Wa-Wa, meaning “Goose in Flight,” and its totem was and remains a goose; nearly all patches issued by Order of the Arrow Lodge 522 since 1957 have included an image of a flying goose. Jake died in 1956 and was buried by Ranger Don Fanning at this spot overlooking Lake Sawyer, where he had spent much of his life.
