West Virginia’s diverse topography, varying elevations, and natural landscape support many native pollinators, which are essential to human well-being, agricultural production, and ecosystem health. Native plants adapted to local climate conditions and soils require limited management, and helping native plant species strengthens plant community health, supports natural reproduction, provides food and cover, limits erosion, and increases biodiversity. Pollinators such as bees, birds, and butterflies spread pollen and help plants reproduce, and more than two-thirds of crop species depend on pollinators, while almost 75% of all flowering plant species need animals for pollination. Globally, pollinators are in decline because human activities, disease, pesticide exposure, and parasites have destroyed and fragmented native pollinator habitat, harming plant reproduction, plant community diversity, ecosystem health, food systems, wildflowers, and native West Virginia habitats. In West Virginia, native pollinators can flourish through simple practices that provide native plants and nesting sites, including planting along highway shoulders instead of mowing and reintroducing native plants to roadsides. Native plants in pollinator habitat develop over time, sleeping in the first year as they establish deep root systems, creeping in the second year with some foliage and greater roots, and leaping in the third year by revealing their full beauty, so habitat areas should not be disturbed while plants complete this cycle. Roadsides offer a conservation opportunity by providing foraging habitat, breeding and nesting opportunities, and links between fragmented habitats, while also helping stabilize roadsides, reduce storm water pollution, support wildlife, and build public awareness and appreciation for the local landscape.
