Mecklenburg County / Halifax County
History
Mecklenburg County covers 669 square miles and was formed in 1764 from Lunenburg; it was named for Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, queen of George III. In 1676, Bacon the Rebel defeated Indians near the present town of Clarksville. Halifax County covers 814 square miles and was formed in 1752 from Lunenburg; it was named for George Montagu Dunk, Earl of Halifax, a British statesman. Berry Hill, an old home, is in this county.
