Gold found at the Carissa lode in 1867 set off Wyoming's largest rush to the South Pass region, where towns such as Miners Delight and Atlantic City grew to support miners before the gold quickly played out and most people moved on, leaving boom-town shells behind. The region also later hosted the highest open pit iron ore mine in the United States, which operated from 1962 until 1984. In the Gas Hills, Neil M. McNeice (Lucky Mc)'s initial 1953 uranium discovery triggered a stampede of prospectors and a boom that transformed Home on the Range, a gas station and post office, into thriving Jeffrey City, but as mining operations drastically dwindled, Jeffrey City's streets had emptied by 1988.
