Allegheny Mountain, spelled Alleghany Mountain in Virginia, is a major ridge in the southern Allegheny Mountains within the Appalachian chain. Running in part along the Virginia–West Virginia line, it also carries the Eastern Continental Divide, giving it both geographic and political significance. Much of its crest rises above 4,000 feet, with named summits including Mad Sheep at 4,225 feet and Paddy Knob at 4,477 feet, as well as Hickory Knob, Chestnut Knob, Bald Knob, and Grassy Knob. Principal gaps include Rucker Gap and Ryder Gap. Top of Allegheny, site of the Camp Allegheny battlefield, and nearby national forest highlands add to its prominence in this border section of the central Appalachians.
