Around 1900, Fourth Street, first known as Columbia Street, formed the important business district of Minster, where people from the surrounding area came to trade and shop in its many businesses. The construction of the Miami & Erie Canal through Minster in 1843 gave a great impetus to trade and prosperity. In 1914, a major civic improvement followed when both Main and Fourth Streets were paved with brick.
