At the peak of the Weeden Island civilization more than 1,100 years ago, people in the region now known as Florida built the Great Mound, one of the greatest feats of American Indian architecture there. Its construction likely followed the same basic steps as building projects do today—inspiration, planning, and construction—and many believe it was completed within one generation under the leadership of a religious leader. Although the exact details remain unknown, the work required extensive planning and organization as community members carried dirt in baskets weighing 30 to 230 pounds each, while others probably supported the effort by supplying food, water, and direction.
