Over 1,100 years ago, this area was a large architectural complex with ten small mounds, two cleared plazas, and the Great Mound, which had platforms, an earthen ramp, and a pyramid-like peak. The function of the Letchworth-Love Mounds has not yet been discovered, but the Weeden Island peoples most likely built this architectural landscape as a ceremonial or special place. They may also have chosen this site carefully because of its proximity to Lake Miccosukee and many creeks, its abundance of plants and animals, and its fertile soil.
