In the early morning of July 25, 1862, Confederate cavalry under Maj. Robert Bailey, accompanied by noted spy Nancy Hart, attacked two companies of the 9th WV Infantry stationed at Summersville. Catching the Federals by surprise, Bailey's men met with little resistance and captured the garrison, including Lt. Col. William Starr. They then burned several buildings in town.
