The Vietnam Women’s Memorial, part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., honors American women who served in the Vietnam War, especially nurses and other specialists whose contributions were often overlooked. Its creation grew from former U.S. Army nurse Diane Carlson Evans’s efforts after 1982, joined by Donna-Marie Boulay and Gerald C. Bender, and succeeded after years of resistance and eventual congressional support. Dedicated on Veterans Day in 1993, the sculpture by Glenna Goodacre depicts three uniformed women with a wounded soldier. Eight yellowwood trees nearby represent the eight American servicewomen who died during the war.
