The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors members of the United States armed forces who served in the Vietnam War, especially those who died, remain missing, or were prisoners as a result of service in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Its central feature, Maya Lin’s black granite Wall, was completed in 1982 and bears names arranged chronologically by date of casualty, creating a circular narrative from 1959 to 1975. Born from an effort launched by Jan Scruggs and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the memorial later expanded with Three Servicemen, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and the In Memory plaque, and became a deeply revered place of mourning and remembrance.
