A rock outline on a distant bluff is an archeological curiosity long known as a landmark. Jacob V. Brower, a Minnesota archeologist, observed the formation in 1902 and interpreted it as a bow and arrow, writing in 1903 that some stones representing the bowstring were displaced and that the intention seemed to have been to represent a bow and arrow drawn to shoot toward Lake Pepin. Modern archeologists think the boulders may form a bird effigy, but no definite conclusion has been reached. Though it may be ancient, its origin and age are unknown, it is no part of the Indian lore of this region, and while boulder alignments made by Indians exist in other states, this is the only one known in Wisconsin; whether it was made by Indians and whether it is a bow and arrow or a bird remain mysteries.
