Browns Point Light
Transportation
Browns Point Light, near Tacoma on Browns Point, marks the east entrance to Commencement Bay in Puget Sound and remains an active historic beacon. A first light station was established there in 1887, followed by a wood-frame lighthouse and keeper’s cottage in 1901 and the present lighthouse in 1933. Automated in 1963, the site still preserves its keeper’s cottage, oil house, and boathouse, and the complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restored in 2021 with local support, it now serves as both a public heritage center and a place where tours and nearby museum exhibits connect visitors to local maritime history.
