The Jackson Purchase is an 8,500-square-mile area that had been the tribal lands of the Chickasaw Indians. The U.S. paid $300,000 for the tract in 1818 after negotiations by Gen. Andrew Jackson and Gov. Isaac Shelby. It was bordered by the Tennessee, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers and now comprises Kentucky's eight and Tennessee's twenty westernmost counties.
