In 1772, Aaron Quimby's tavern stood on this site, where on the morning of April 14th Ebenezer Mudgett and other men from Weare, angered by their impending arrest for cutting pine trees greater than one foot in diameter in violation of the King's edict reserving them for the Royal Navy, vigorously attacked the sheriff and his deputy with switches. Mudgett and his cohorts later received light fines from a sympathetic court. This rebellion was one of the first acts against English authority leading up to the revolution in 1775.
