Crotched Mountain, a 2,063-foot peak in western Hillsborough County, spans Francestown, Bennington, and Greenfield, with its name derived from the V-shaped form that reminded early settlers of a tree’s fork. The mountain serves several modern uses, including skiing on its northern slopes and rehabilitation facilities along part of its southern ridge. It also holds an important place in energy history: in 1980, US Windpower installed 20 turbines there, each rated at 30 kilowatts, creating what was described as the world’s first wind farm. The company later failed, and the turbines were eventually removed.
