Olancha Peak is a 12,132-foot summit in California’s Sierra Nevada on the Tulare–Inyo county line within the South Sierra Wilderness. Named for the nearby town of Olancha, it stands out on the Sierra Nevada escarpment and is also called Indianhead and the Sleeping Maiden because parts of its southern ridgeline can resemble a man’s face or a woman lying on her back. It is one of the highest summits in the Sierra south of Mount Whitney and the southernmost peak on the escarpment to rise well above treeline, where most of its precipitation falls as snow.
