The Cima volcanic field is a broad basaltic landscape in the eastern Mojave Desert of California, covering about 600 square kilometers west of Cima Dome with roughly 40 volcanic cones and 60 lava flows. Recognized in 1973 as the Cinder Cone Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark, it preserves volcanic activity that began in the Late Miocene, continued in several phases, and produced its youngest known vent, Black Tank cone, about 15,000 years ago. Its cones, lava tubes, cinders, lava bombs, feeder dikes, and tuff rings also record changing desert conditions, later human use, and important geological research on lava, soils, and landscape evolution.
