Teutonia Peak Trail
Nature
5
Teutonia Peak Trail crosses the slope of Cima Dome in its first mile and passes through the densest concentration of Joshua trees in the world. Beyond the remnants of the old Teutonia Mine, the trail gains 750 feet as it ascends the rocky peak in the distance. The silver mine was first worked in 1896 but was quickly abandoned. In 1906, Charles Togel rediscovered the old mine, attracted investors, and built roads and a small camp called Togel City, but the mine was soon abandoned again, like many others in the Mojave Desert. Cima Dome's subtle rise is best viewed from a distance, including from Mid Hills Campground about 15 miles away, and its form resembles a bull's-eye of circles on a topographic map, stretching ten miles at its widest point.
