Zion Lutheran Church, the oldest continuing church in Lexington County, originated with pioneers who settled in this area in the 1740s. In 1787, the "Corpus Evangelicum," consisting of fifteen congregations to supervise the German churches in the state's interior, was organized at Zion. The church stood at two earlier sites near the river before moving here in 1922. Near here, Godfrey Dreher built an early frontier fort on land he received in the 1740s. During the Cherokee War in 1760, Dreher's Fort protected 121 men, women, and children from hostile Indians, and the first location of Zion Church stood near the fort on Twelve Mile Creek.
