Tenaya Peak
Nature
Tenaya Peak rises above Tenaya Lake in Yosemite’s high country and bears the name of Chief Tenaya, who met the Mariposa Battalion near the lake. Its name recalls a painful episode in Yosemite’s past: in 1851, the Mariposa Battalion under Captain John Boling expelled Chief Tenaya and his people from the region that later became Yosemite National Park. The mountain is also known today as a recreation destination, with several rock-climbing routes and hiking approaches leading to the summit over class 2 and class 3 terrain.
