On this spot, in a bark chapel, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was first offered in New York State by Rev. Joseph M. Chaumonot on Sunday, November 14, 1655. The inscription also includes the words, “Going Therefore Teach Ye all Nations Baptizing Them in the Name of the Father And of the Son and of the Holy Ghost Teaching Them to Observe all Things Whatsoever I Have Commanded You,” identified as St. Mathew XXVII 19-20. A monument erected by the Order of the Alhambra in 1917 was rededicated on August 12, 2001, in memory of Thomas C. Hovancik, Past State Deputy and Former Vice-Supreme Master, by members of the Central New York Chapter Knights of Columbus.
