Dallam County was created in 1876 and organized in 1891. It was named for James W. Dallam, who was born in Baltimore on Sept. 24, 1818, was educated at Brown University, came to Texas in 1839, and was the author of Dallam’s Digest of the Decisions of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas. He died on Aug. 20, 1847.
