Tohono Chul Park in Casas Adobes, north of Tucson, is a botanical garden, nature preserve, and cultural museum centered on the nature, art, and culture of the Sonoran Desert. The land began as citrus groves in the 1920s, passed through several owners, and included adobe and hacienda-style buildings that remain in use. Richard and Jean Wilson assembled much of the old estate beginning in 1966, resisted development, and helped establish a non-profit to preserve it. Formally dedicated in 1985, it grew into a wildlife refuge and public garden known for native desert plant collections, night-blooming cereus, educational landscapes, and cultural exhibitions.
