On 2 September 1945, while anchored in Tokyo Bay, the U.S.S. Missouri was the site where the Instrument of Surrender ending the Second World War was signed. At 0904, the Japanese representatives, Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu, Chief of Staff of Japanese Army Headquarters, signed for Japan, accompanied by nine staff and observing officers. At 0908, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, signed for all the nations at war with Japan, accompanied by Lieutenant General Jonathan M. Wainwright and Lieutenant General Arthur Percival, who had been commanding generals at the falls of Corregidor and Singapore in 1942. At 0912, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed for the United States, accompanied by Admiral William F. Halsey and Rear Admiral Forrest P. Sherman. Representatives of the other Allied nations then signed, including delegates of the Republic of China, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics, the Commonwealth of Australia, Canada, the Republic of France, the Dominion of New Zealand, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, completing the ceremony that brought the war to a close.
