San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park in the Florida Keys protects the wreck of the San Pedro, a Dutch-built vessel that sailed with a Spanish convoy from Havana in 1733 carrying silver Mexican pesos and Chinese porcelain. A hurricane struck the fleet in the Straits of Florida two days after departure, sinking or swamping most of its 22 ships in one of the Keys’ notable shipwreck disasters. Opened to the public in 1989 as Florida’s second Underwater Archaeological Preserve, the site preserves and interprets the wreck for divers and snorkelers. It remains a protected link to Spanish maritime history, the dangers of the Florida Straits, and the Keys’ long shipwreck legacy.
