Emerald Farm is part of an original 450-acre working farm dating from the late 1800s and continues its agricultural heritage by raising livestock and harvesting hay, pecans, herbs, and fruit on a small scale. It operates as a hands-on educational facility where visitors learn about nature and the relationships among resident species, from goats to honey bees, and can tour the soap factory where all-natural Saanen soap is made. Other attractions include rides on the Emerald Farm Express, the Emerald Farm Model Railroad Clubhouse with one of the largest model railroads in the Southeast, shops for antiques, natural food, hobbies, and soap, picnic areas, fish feeding, and Saturday morning sanctioned ABA/BMX races for riders ranging in age from 3 1/2 years to 60 years. Greenwood’s history is closely tied to the railroad, around whose tracks the community grew and formed one of the widest main streets in the state, and that connection is reflected in Emerald Farm Station and its antique train, a 1957 limited edition built in Salt Lake City, Utah, with authentic railroad signals. The Emerald Farm Model Railroad Club has created a large layout in two scales where visitors can experience whistles and smoke effects. The farm’s Saanen goats, a Swiss dairy breed known for gentle dispositions and high milk production, average 8 to 10 pounds of milk per day, and that goat milk is used to make all-natural soaps, lotions, and body products; a gallon yields about 100 bars of soap, and since 1988 the farm has used a formula based on an old process with fine natural ingredients, containing no dyes, preservatives, or artificial fragrances, with each bar containing one-third whole goat milk.
