Howell Island Conservation Area is a 2,547-acre protected tract on a low, heavily wooded island in the Missouri River near St. Charles, Missouri. Managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, it consists mostly of bottomland forest and woodland, with smaller areas of old fields and cropland. Its floodplain setting strongly shapes access and use, as rising river levels can cover the causeway and the island was entirely submerged during the Great Flood of 1993. Named for either Thomas Howell or John Howell, early settlers in the area, the island offers limited recreation, including an 8-mile trail, seasonal camping for river travelers, fishing, and regulated hunting.
