During the occupation of Fort King George from 1721 to 1727, soldiers gave their lives defending the Southern English frontier in America and were buried on this bluff. Built on the low ground 200 yards east of here, Fort King George was the first English settlement in the land that is now Georgia. More than 140 British soldiers died in this first planned effort to hold the Old Southeast for English-speaking people.
